How to Pack Up Your Household Belongings Like a Pro

So you’re moving house! That’s great; you’ve found a new home and the moving date is organised. You’ve found the right removalist to do all the heavy lifting, so you’re all set. Unless you have organised for the removalist to do all the packing for you, then no, you’re not done yet!

The estimator from the removal company you have engaged should be able to advise you of the number (and sizes) of boxes, rolls of tape and reams of packing paper that you will require.

Most reputable companies will deliver the packing materials to you if needed. If you are sourcing your own cartons, make sure they are sturdy and if possible uniform in size(s).

Before you start to pack, throw away, sell or donate any unwanted items (why pay to move things you don’t want or need?!).

Packing up a house full of belongings can seem really daunting but if you break it down into rooms then it will be more manageable.

Top tips for Boxing up Belonging

– Pack one room at a time, and start with the items that are used the least.
– Make sure you tape the bottom of the box securely – you can never use too much tape! The flaps of the box should NOT overlap. Close the sides opposite each other at the same time and tape across in both directions on the outside.
– Use the right size box!
– Book / wine cartons are suitable for heavy or delicate items such as glassware, china, figurines, cutlery, books, wine, DVD’s, CD’s and videos.
– Standard cartons are suitable for crockery, ornaments, shoes, toys, linen, clothes and other medium weight items.
– Porta-robes are used for hanging clothing and oversized items.
– Picture cartons are for mirrors and pictures.

Once you have set up your box, scrunch up packing paper to go in first to provide a cushioning layer.

When packing plates, bundle them together with paper and a layer of paper in between and place them in the carton on their edge.

Place heavy items in the bottom half of a box then use another layer of scrunched up paper before filling the box with lighter items.

Finally top the box up with more scrunched up paper before sealing closed.

Just like you can’t use too much tape – you can never use too much paper!

Don’t forget to label each and every box!

Write on which room it belongs in and list the contents to make unpacking easier.

If you are dismantling beds and other furniture, place the screws into zip lock bags and write on them what they belong to. These bags should either go in the car with you or into a box to be loaded last onto the removal truck. No one wants to spend the night on the floor because you can’t find the screws.

If this all still sounds overwhelming, contact your removalist and consider having them do some (such as breakables and kitchen items) or all of the packing for you.
